How Long Would My Divorce Take?

by Mr Lim Chong Boon, Head of Family Law at PKWA LAW

How Long Would My Divorce Take?

This is a question that would inevitably be at the front of the minds of those going through a divorce, so that they can plan for their lives after. The length of divorce proceedings primarily depends on whether parties are going for an uncontested or contested divorce.

Uncontested Divorce

For an uncontested divorce, where parties are agreeable to the basis of the divorce and all outstanding ancillary matters if there are any, it will take about one month to obtain the Interim Judgment. Following which, the Final Judgment will be issued about three months from the date of the Interim Judgment, thus concluding the proceedings.

Contested Divorce

For a contested divorce, the length of proceedings will depend on the complexity of the case. On average, most contested cases take between 6 months to 1 year to complete. There are a minority of cases that take more than 1 year, especially if the case is hotly contested.

We offer a free consultation so as to understand your situation and will be better able to estimate the length of divorce proceedings then.
