Divorce Support Specialist Agencies in Singapore

 .

A divorce will no doubt be one of the most painful and emotional experiences in your life. When a marriage ends, it not only signifies the loss of a relationship, it also brings uncertainty about the future. During trying times like this, it is crucial to get all the support you need for yourself and also your children.

 .

Divorce Support Groups

In Singapore, such divorce support groups can be found in the form of Divorce Support Specialist Agencies (“DSSAs”). DSSAs, which were first set up in 2015 by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, are specialised community agencies that provide counselling and programmes which aim to protect the interests of children as well as restore parent-child relationships for divorcing and divorced families.

DSSA counsellors and social workers are trained to work with divorcing and divorced families. They provide specialised information and non-legal advice relating to divorce.  They also offer counselling and helped to mediate in family disputes.

The 6 DSSAs under the Ministry of Social and Family Development are:

(i)         Care Corner Centre for Co-Parenting

(ii)        Healing Hearts@Fei Yue

(iii)       HELP Family Service Centre

(iv)       PPIS As-Salaam Family Support Centre

(v)        Thrive Parenting! AMKFSC Community Service

(vi)       Thye Hua Kwan Centre for Family Harmony

 .

Services provided by DSSAs

DSSAs adopt a child-centric approach when providing care and support to divorced or divorcing families. As DSSA’s primary role is to protect the interests of the children and facilitate co-parenting, the staff at DSSA have extensive experience in dealing with divorce matter, being either trained counsellors or social workers.

Below are some of the services/programmes provided by DSSAs:

 .

  • Pre-divorce Mandatory Parenting Programme

This is a mandatory 2-hour consultation session for parents before they file for divorce if they have children below the age of 21. The main aim of the session is to help parents understand the adverse impact a divorce can have on their children and to highlight that the interests of their children should always be their utmost priority when making any decisions.

 .

  • Children in Between (“CiB”)

This is a free workshop offered to parents and children aged between 6 to 15 years of age to help them manage the negative effects of a divorce. There are different workshops for parents and child, being CiB for Parents and CiB for Children. As the workshops cover different topics applicable to parents and children, parents are encouraged to attend separate workshops from their children.

 .

  • Supervised Exchange and Visitation Programme

     .

This programme is for court ordered cases only and helps to facilitate supervised parenting by providing a safe platform for children to meet their non-custodial parent. This programme is targeted at families where there is a high level of conflict and/or tension between parent and child. Currently, only Thye Hua Kwan Centre for Family Harmony and Care Corner Centre for Co-parenting offer this Supervised Exchange and Visitation Programme.

  • Information and non-legal advice on divorce-related financial and housing issues
  • Case management
  • Counselling
  • Family dispute management
  • Support groups

 .

As the programmes that each DSSA offers varies, you may wish to check out the list of programmes offered by each DSSA here.
