Our clients' personal stories in their own words:

In desperation to seek justice, and in my hour of need, I was recommended to PKWA Law. Dorothy Tan LISTENED to my case, and worked tirelessly over the holidays and weekends to meet impossible deadlines. If Dorothy and her team decides to champion your cause, you should consider yourself very fortunate." - CT, after PKWA LAW had successfully represented him in the landmark Court of Appeal case of Twiss, Christopher James Hans v Twiss, Yvonne Prendergast [2015] SGCA 52.

"I was at a loss when the first lawyer firm that handled my divorce informed me on the court day itself that they gave up. I chanced upon PKWA LAW after I had dried my tears. Within 3 months, I got what that was deemed impossible!” - Ms N

"You listened and added the “human touch and heart.” - JW

"Your judgement and ability to steer the various proceedings were absolutely critical. I was able to give you my full trust. You have certainly made a lasting impact, one which I will not forget. Thank you." - AJ

"I turned to Dorothy to assist me where all others had failed. I had four previous lawyers, who either dismissed me, took easy options, or ignored the facts of my case. In desperation to seek justice, and in my hour of need, I was recommended to PKWA.

Dorothy Tan LISTENED to my case, and worked tirelessly over the holidays and weekends to meet impossible deadlines.

A very upsetting and stressful time but I will be forever grateful as Dorothy believed in my case and sought a fair and just resolution against insurmountable odds.

At every juncture, Dorothy provided realistic, honest assessments and I proceeded based on her recommendations.

If Dorothy and her team decides to champion your cause, you should consider yourself very fortunate."

"I was at a loss when the first lawyer firm that handled my divorce informed me on the court day itself that they gave up after 4 months of preparation. It was a huge setback and suddenly I have doubts that I will ever get the maintenance the court awarded me.

I chanced upon PKWA LAW after I had dried my tears. They seem to know their stuff well. We met about 4 times. Mr Lim and Ms Dorothy took time to listen and assured me it can be done.

We started everything all over again. Within 3 months, I got what that was deemed impossible! Knowing that with the order I can now proceed to the next step comforts us tremendously.

Thank you! Your team made a difference in our lives."

I had wanted to drop you and Jessica an email last night.

Thank you both for your support, advice, words of wisdom, and counselling. The initial step to divorce is not easy, scary, and fraught with uncertainties, but you have both made that journey all that much easier to bear. Things could not have turned out any better. In fact, the wife called me after we left PKWA to go for a drink and we shared a good light-hearted moment – something that we had not done for a long time.

So thank you both for all that you had done; it was more than just a divorce. You helped my wife and I find resolution, peace, confidence, happiness, and even friendship. These are things that money cannot buy and the future looks so much brighter.

Thanks also for your kind words and best wishes. I wish you and Jessica all the very best too.

Hope all is well at your end.

Many thanks for your help all this while.

Great thanks for the encouragement, support and I’m glad that I’ve been granted sole custody of my children. I fought bravely at the court counselling though I was not confident as the belief is that the Court usually encourages joint custody. As I fought, I trembled. And I’m glad I had fought.

It was good that you were calm, gave me time and reason to cool down and ultimately got me the settlement I want.

    Hi, Chong Boon,

I still can recall the day when I first came to see you with my brother in your office. That time, I was lost and helpless, had gone to seek legal aid, enquired with HDB, communicated with the EC developer, went to seek advice from MP. Yet, I was still lost, no direction, don’t know how to move on, where to get an answer. I was afraid of losing the EC.

The advice you gave me, the confidence in you, … I am glad that now all is sorted out with regard to the divorce and the ancillaries. I am glad I got to keep the EC.

    Thanks a lot, Chong Boon.

    Please take care."

  • WILL & PROBATE

    SINGAPORE WILLS AND PROBATE LAWYER

    Wills and Probate Fee Chart

    Wills

Protect your loves ones by making a Will. When you make a Will, you create certainty about who will inherit your estate and who should manage it.

    Probate and Letters of Administration

Our team of experienced and dedicated probate lawyers, supported by a team of professional legal executives, have an extensive and varied experience in advising and obtaining Grants of Probate (where there is a will) and Letters of Administration (where there is no will).

What does a probate lawyer in Singapore do?

When a person dies, someone needs to collect all his assets and distribute them to the beneficiaries. The probate lawyer will apply to court to get you a Grant of Probate (where the person dies with a will) or Letters of Administration (where the person dies without a will) to enable the rightful person to collect the deceased’s assets and to distribute them in accordance with the will or in accordance with the Intestate Succession Act.

To put it simply, the probate lawyer’s main job is to help family members to obtain a Grant of Probate (where there is a will) or Letters of Administration (where there is no will). These are simply court orders that identifies the rightful person to collect the deceased’s assets and to distribute them. As an example, if the deceased has a bank account, the bank will need to see this court order to satisfy themselves that they are dealing with the rightful party.

Because of our vast experience, we normally are able to complete obtaining the grant of probate or letters of administration in 1 to 2 months for most cases.

Call our Family Law, Probate and Wills team at tel: 6854-5336 for any further questions.

Below you will find useful information on probate matters.

    1. What happens when a person dies and leaves behind a property that belongs to him/her?

A person, known either as an 'executor' or an 'administrator', has to be appointed by the Court to take charge of the deceased person's property (collectively known as his 'estate').

If there is a will that has been made by the deceased person, it will contain details of the appointment of an 'executor' to take charge of the estate as appointed by the deceased person.

If there is no will made by the deceased person, an appointment of a person known as an 'administrator' will be appointed to take charge of the estate. This administrator is usually one of the next-of-kin of the deceased.

In order for such persons to be recognised legally as the executor or administrator of the deceased person's estate, applications have to be made for 'Probate' or 'Letters of Administration' respectively.

    2. What does a 'Grant of Probate' mean?

It is a court order authorising an executor, appointed by the deceased person under his Will, to administer his estate according to the directions contained in his Will.

    3. What are Letters of Administration?

It is a court order authorising a person(s) to administer the estate of the deceased person in accordance with the law.

    4. Who can apply for the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration?

    Grant of Probate

Only the executor(s) named in the Will of the deceased may apply for the Grant of Probate.

    Letters of Administration

In the case of Letters of Administration, any of the deceased person's family members is entitled to apply to be appointed as an administrator. However, the law gives priority to certain members of the family over others, depending on the marital status of the deceased person and his/her family's composition.

For example, if the deceased person was single, his surviving parents will have the priority over his brothers and sisters to be the administrators; or if the deceased person was married with children, his spouse will have priority over the children to be the administrator.

The law also requires that at least 2 administrators be appointed where there are one or more minor beneficiaries. A 'minor beneficiary' refers to any person below 21 years of age who has a share in the estate. This is to protect the minor beneficiary's interest in the estate.
